Bush School

What is Bush School?

Bush School is our outdoor learning approach that uses the local reserve as an extension of the classroom. It is inspired by the Forest School model and supports our belief that regular, purposeful time in nature enhances student engagement, wellbeing and learning. First starting in the Nordic countries, Bush School gained momentum and popularity once the approach was adopted by the UK.

Bush School operates from K to 6, with students engaging at least once each Noongar season. Rather than being a fixed or timetabled program, staff are encouraged to view the reserve as a flexible learning space that can be accessed throughout the year. Teachers and students engage in Bush School to support learning in Science, HASS, Art, Mathematics or English.

Bush School experiences are designed to reinforce explicitly taught content, skills and concepts in authentic contexts. Learning is purposeful and teacher‑directed, providing students with opportunities to practise, apply and consolidate classroom learning in a meaningful outdoor environment.

Bush School also embeds Aboriginal cultural perspectives and promotes care for Country, sustainability and connection to place.

Through participating in the Bush School program, we have developed a strong and valued community relationship with the Council of Nedlands and Friends of Hollywood Reserve, as they assist with Bush School lessons.
